Born Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales, 4 January 1940, third son of Gus and Annie Williams. Educated at Cowbridge School and Jesus College, Oxford (MA [Oxon], MPhil, PhD, FGS). Taught at College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Trinity College, Carmarthen.
